Flying Pests: NJ Bee Control

Spring is a beautiful time of year where nature starts to teem with life. With all of the beauty, there are some drawbacks. NJ pests also come back to life during the spring, and can become a major nuisance for homeowners and business owners alike. They can be especially dangerous for a family member, or yourself, if someone is allergic to bees. Alco Pest Control, a NJ pest control company, wants to help you distinguish some of the areas worst offenders: bees, wasps, and hornets.

Bees – There are three main types of bees in NJ: honey bees, bumble bees, and carpenter bees. The majority of honey bees in NJ are kept in managed colonies for honey harvesting. Honey bees are distinguished by their amber ½ inch body covered with hair. Bumble bees in NJ have round yellow and black bodies covered in fine hair. They are generally non-aggressive unless provoked. Carpenter bees in NJ look like bumble bees but their abdomens are black and shiny. They drill tunnels in wood where they lay their eggs.

Wasps – There are two main types of wasps in NJ, the paper wasp and yellow jacket. Paper, or Red, wasps have distinct paper like hives that are built on the underside of things like benches and eaves. Paper wasps rarely sting humans, unless their nest is located near a door way or another high-traffic area. Yellow Jackets in NJ however are the cause for the most human sting victims. Yellow Jackets are about half an inch long, like a honey bee, but are bright yellow and black with a shiny body. They are an extremely defensive species and make their nests in holes in the ground, which is why most homeowners discover the nest while mowing. Unlike honey bees, Yellow Jackets can sting multiple times.

Hornets – Bald Faced Hornets are the most common type of hornet in NJ. They are about ¾ of an inch long and black with ivory or white markings. They are not defensive and often make nests quite close to human activity, without becoming a nuisance.
